Welcome to the home page of Explorer Post #99. We are located in Aurora, IL -- and are a subsidiary of the Aurora Fire Department.
The explorer post is a group of 15-20 year olds interested in learning about the fire service. Our program covers the state of Illinois Firefighter II curriculum, and is cycled through once per year. In addition, extra classes are held such as RIT training, firefighter survival, HIPPA, and CPR.
Our program is a mixture of classroom and hands-on activities. First and foremost we require all explorers to have a passing classroom grade of 80% or higher to be allowed to participate in hands-on drills. After this is accomplished, our explorers take part in activities such as: Fire hose advancement, physical training, Live fire extinguishment, ladder placement and climbing, rope operations, ventilation, search and rescue, and much more.
For our explorers that meet the minimum requirements, they are allowed to take place in the ride-a-long program which enables them to ride on the ambulance, engine, and truck, and get real-life experience running emergency calls with the Aurora Fire Department staff.
In addition to gaining fire service knowledge, hands on experience, and the ability to ride along with the fire department, Explorers who meet minimum requirements are also granted either (3) or (5) preference points which are applicable towards the Aurora Fire Dept. full-time examination. To date, 3 former Explorers have been hired as full-time members of AFD. If interested in joining, our minimum requirements and online application are located in the Application link to the left.
